In South Africa, we find ourselves in a society where those in the townships have a need for guidance and for someone to walk the road with them. Township communities have a deep hunger, and are crying out, for members in their communities with certain scarce skills. It is our firm belief that the genesis of solving this problem lies with the children and that intervention should take place at an early age.

Our Mission

We live in a society that finds it difficult to produce professionals like doctors, engineers, writers and so forth. This has proven to be difficult even for those who have money, and have made provision for further studies. So if this class of society struggle with the attainment of these goals, what chance do township communities have? Communities with minimal resources and entrenched in a seemingly never ending cycle of poverty and drug abuse. It’s rare to find professionals hailing from the township, hence these are the people who are in the greater need of assistance. Our society has rendered these people voiceless because according to the upper classes, they simply do not benefit society at large. We intend to give them a voice, but not just any voice:  a voice that will sing for generations, echoing for eternity.

Our focus will not be on the child alone, but also on the parents. Much like a seed cannot flower without sunlight and water, so too children will not reach their full potential without the positive support of their parents. We know that with the parents fully on board - half the battle is won, and the child will find himself on a lighted path towards becoming a skillful, valuable member of society.

Due to the fact that many children in the townships have one or more parents in prison, we would eventually like to extend our activities to the prisons in the Western Cape.

After school math and homework tutoring

Our volunteer tutors work closely with the students, teaching them math and focusing on any problem areas they might present in other subjects. Township schools have traditionally struggled in mathematics and the drop out and failure rate is alarmingly high. Our goal is to help to stem this tide.

feeding scheme

It's difficult to think clearly on an empty stomach. Therefore we offer a simple meal to every child who attends the program. It's been said that some students only attend because of the food on offer, but any lure that benefits education is a worthy one.

mentoring

Our team and volunteers act as mentors to the students, offering motivation, guidance and counsel where need be. Our door is always open and we intend walking side by side with the students, on their journey to the attainment of their aims.

outings and activities

We strive to give the students a better understanding of themselves, by giving them a better understanding of their greater environment. Thus, we try to organise trips and events that could potentially inspire and enlighten.

vision

At present, we are working on creating our own bespoke after-school curriculum to supplement the homework and math tutoring.

We see potential in every child and we intend supporting them all the way on their journey to breaking the shackles of township life. In doing so it would involve finding bursaries, scholarships and sponsorship for the students, as well as making sure that they were are academically equipped for the challengers to come. Student’s social problems will be regarded as V.O.V’s problem - V.O.V’s resources will be utilized to remove barriers that prevent township children from realizing their potential and becoming skillful members of society.

Eventually, we aim to set up V.O.V in every township in the country. It's imperative that those deemed voiceless, be given a voice - and we will strive wholeheartedly to the attainment of this vision.
